Why Jamaica Could Win This Game

When it comes to Jamaica, they are a team that does not have a lot of success. As said in the beginning, they have missed the last six World Cups, last qualifying for the 1998 World Cup in France, where they finished last in their group with one win in three matches. Still, this is a team that can pull out a result and with all the circumstances around this game, it would be foolish to just say that Jamaica will roll over for Mexico.

Their biggest shot for Jamaica in this game is the fact that they are actually solid at home, especially against the stronger teams. Just in the last two years, Jamaica managed to play the US, Costa Rica, and Canada to draws, with the games versus US and Canada happening at home. This team cannot be underestimated, as they will take any chance given to them. They might not win a lot, but playing against these tougher teams, they are resilient and will not quit until the last moments of the game.

Lastly, the competition might work in favor of Jamaica. Mexico will likely not take this game too seriously, as the Nations League is considered a filler competition. Thus, Jamaica could look to take this opportunity to win the game. Mexico is a much better team, but they might not field their best team and they might not be as motivated as Jamaican players. Overall, this is their best chance for a victory against a team this strong.

Why Mexico Could Win This Game

There is a multitude of reasons why, but the strongest reason for Mexico winning this game is the quality gap. With all due respect to Jamaica, Mexico is a squad that is not only going to the World Cup, but they will look to make a splash there. Overall, the last time that Mexico went out in the group stages was in 1978 in Argentina. Thus, we can say that Mexico is a serious team that usually resolves these kinds of games in their favor without too much effort.

In terms of other reasons, form is a major one. If we take out the nasty 3-0 loss to Uruguay, Mexico last lost in November of last year. Since then, Mexico won six games and drew five. It is important to mention that most of these wins and draws came against significantly stronger teams than Jamaica, so the Mexican fans have a lot of reason to be very confident. Jamaica's form is another reason for Mexico to be sure of a win, as they have won just three of their last 20 games.

Last, but certainly not least, there are not many chances for Mexico to play competitive games until the World Cup rolls around. If they were to have more games than this one and a friendly versus Paraguay in August, we could say that Mexico might take this game off and play some youngsters. However, with limited opportunities to test his team out, coach Gerardo Martino will likely field his best squad and will look to win this game in preparation for the competition at the end of the year.
