The first trade of the 2018 NBA Draft on Thursday night featured a blockbuster deal between the Atlanta Hawks and Dallas Mavericks at the top of the draft order.

The deal saw the Hawks move the third overall pick to the Mavs for the fifth overall pick along with a 2019 first-round pick that Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports is reporting is top-five protected.

The Hawks would own the Mavericks' 2019 first-round pick if that selection falls out of the first five in the draft order. If not, then it would move on to the same scenario for Dallas' 2020 first-round selection with the protection of that pick being unknown at this moment.

The move allowed the Mavericks to land former Real Madrid standout wingman Luka Doncic, who the team had reportedly heavily desired to take him early in the draft. Doncic is regarded as being one of the most promising talents in this year's draft class that is a polished offensive talent who can create his own shot while possessing excellent court vision.

Dallas will add him to their young core group alongside second-year point guard Dennis Smith Jr. and forward Harrison Barnes. In light of that, Smith Jr. has already reacted to the selection of Doncic with his excitement and support of his new teammate.
