Adam Silver and the NBA are trying to push reforms in the wake of the Dallas Mavericks workplace misconduct investigation. Per Shams Charania of The Athletic, Silver and the league sent out a memo encouraging teams to increase the number of women in organizations and more specifically, in leadership positions. Additionally, they want to improve harassment reporting.

Charania also reports that Silver is pushing teams to:

“Evaluate all executives on efforts to eliminate harassment; conduct anonymous workplace surveys; provide consistent discipline when misconduct is substantiated.”

This is a positive step forward for the NBA. But the league is far from done with reforms and steps to ensure something like the situation in the Mavericks organization never happens again.

Dallas still needs to take a long look in the mirror, but Mark Cuban seems to be honestly trying to fix the problem. He hired Cynthia Marshall as CEO and she became the first African-American female CEO in the NBA. This move happened prior to Silver's memo, but it was a move Cuban made in order to right the ship and get a handle on just how bad things got for the Mavericks.

The hope is that teams take the steps to fix this issue and hiring more women in leadership positions, improving harassment reporting, and providing consistent discipline following misconduct is an excellent place to start.

The league and its teams aren't perfect, but it's reassuring to hear that the league is taking the problem of workplace misconduct seriously. There work is far from over, but this is an encouraging start.
