Of all the commissioners of the four major North American pro sports leagues, NBA’s Adam Silver undeniably is the most loved. It’s not even close. Roger Goodell has often been criticized by fans and NFL players alike, who are generally unhappy with the way he is running the league. Gary Bettman of the NHL might be the most reviled of them all, as reflected by the constant rain of boos whenever he appears on the ice. Rob Manfred of MLB isn’t hated that much, but he’s not enjoying anywhere near the level of admiration and support Silver gets from people in and around the NBA.

Case in point: Silver attended the game between the Philadelphia 76ers and the Washington Wizards on Wednesday, and immediately got the treatment usually reserved for players from fans in the Capital One Arena. According to Candace Buckner of The Washington Post, one fan even egged Silver to take over Goodell’s job.

People easily identify themselves with Silver, who’s been doing a tremendous job of handling matters in the NBA. Like a savvy NBA rookie who plays like a veteran, Silver garnered a ton of respect early in his tenure, when he acted swiftly on the Donald Sterling controversy, banning the former L.A. Clippers owner for racist remarks made against Magic Johnson.

Silver became the NBA commissioner in 2014, and as good as he’s been in playing his role in ensuring the league’s growth, don’t expect him running the show in the NFL anytime soon.
