NBA commissioner Adam Silver has recently come to the defense of the players with regards to the ongoing debate about fans verbally abusing players during games.

Silver made it abundantly clear in a recent statement that the league intends to lock down on these abusive fans, and that this is something the NBA does not intend to take lightly.

“I also want to send a clear message to those small, tiny minority of fans who might engage in that sort of conduct that it absolutely won’t be tolerated,” said Silver, via Jerry Bembry of The Undefeated.

The commissioner carried on with his stern warning, stating that offenders will be caught, and that the league is well-equipped to monitor such untoward incidents.

“We’re going to catch you, because in every one of our arenas there are numerous high-definition cameras pointed at stands, so we’re going to see it,” he explained. “There’s also 18,000 fellow spectators who are holding high-definition cameras in their hands. So there aren’t many incidents now, when a player points something out and says somebody did something, where we’re not going to be able to get tape and see exactly what happened and ban that fan from the arena, if necessary.”

This is certainly something the players will welcome with open arms. There have been several instances this season wherein players have been on the receiving end of some demeaning verbal abuse, and this move by the NBA should be able to help eliminate this ugly facet of the game.
