Andrew Bogut ’embarrassed’ by NBL’s handling of canceled final

NBL, Andrew Bogut

In light of ongoing concerns surrounding the coronavirus pandemic, the NBL decided to call off its five-game championship series between the Sydney Kings and Perth Wildcats. Kings big man and former NBA player Andrew Bogut was in support of this decision, as were most of his teammates. However, he wishes the league would have handled things a bit differently.

Bogut’s Kings were trailing in the series by a count of two games to one before his team refused to continue playing, noting concerns about the coronavirus. Ultimately, the NBL crowned Perth as champions of a shortened series that was played without fans from Game 2 onward.

“After almost three hours of back and forth (and plenty of tears), we came to what ultimately was the hardest decision any athlete or team could make,” Andrew Bogut tweeted Thursday.

“I want to go on record and say I am beyond embarrassed and disappointed in regards to how this was handled by our league from the week leading up to the grand final series,” Bogut added.

Andrew Bogut, who is expected to speak more with the media soon, went on to note that his frustration has nothing to do with the Wildcats being crowned champions.

According to reports, the Wildcats wanted play to go on, but the Kings rejected several options to complete the series, including chartered flights and shortening the series from five games to three. The Kings made their decision to withdraw after Western Australian health experts called for a state border closure. Team officials later noted that it was a move made with the “wellbeing of society” in mind.
