Portland Trail Blazers 10-time All-Star Carmelo Anthony has been quite vocal of late with regards to the social injustices that have mired the nation. The 36-year-old has now come out with a new proposition pertaining to top NBA prospects potentially joining HBCU's or Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

According to Anthony, all this movement needs is a single instigator:

“All it takes is one person to change history,” Anthony said, via Bleacher Report (h/t Chris Burkhardt of NBC Sports Northwest). “It changes college sports because you have a young black kid who is at the top of his game who decided to go to a black university.”

When it comes to recruiting at the college level, “blue blood” schools such as Duke, Kentucky, and North Carolina, to name a few, have always been at the pinnacle — and for good reason. These universities have tremendous basketball programs, that more often than not, propel their athletes to successful careers.

Nevertheless, Carmelo Anthony believes that young NBA hopefuls should also consider HBCU's such as Florida A&M, Hampton, or maybe even Howard University. In Melo's mind, these schools should likewise have an equal chance of recruiting the cream of the crop.

As it is, it seems that Anthony may have found the “one person” he is looking for in Mikey Williams, a highly-touted prospect of the 2023 class. The promising guard is currently attending San Ysidro High School, and already, has intimated the possibility of committing to an HBCU:

Williams appears to be serious about this, and he even explained in a lengthy post why he has been thinking about joining an HBCU for years now.

Looking at the big picture, this movement does not seem to have a significant or lasting effect in the age-old battle against racism. However, these are exactly the small steps that need to be taken in order to help achieve the collective goal.
