NBA legend Charles Barkley just showed that betting on one's self is not always a good idea.

Prior to the final day of the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship, Barkley revealed that he bet $100,000 on himself to finish within the Top 70 of the tournament that had more than 80 participants. Several sportsbooks offered the prop bet, with Chuck picking the 5-to-1 odds.

For what it's worth, in last year's celebrity golf event, the current NBA analyst finished second to the last out of 70 participants. However, Barkley was so confident this time around that he was more than willing to put his own money on the line.

Unfortunately, it all fired back to Barkley.

As The Associated Press noted in its report, the one-time NBA MVP finished tied for 76th place in the competition. So close yet so far.

Of course that is still a huge improvement from his previous result, and considering the criticisms he got about his swing, the fact that he beat out 10 others among the 87 finishers is nothing to scoff at. But then again, it looks like the ex-NBA star is not yet ready to take on the big boys  just yet.

If there's any consolation for Charles Barkley, it's the fact that his fellow ex-NBA player won the competition. Vinny Del Negro beat John Smoltz in the end to become the first basketball player to win the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship.

Well, better luck next time, Chuck!
