NBA legend Charles Oakley is a fan of the “Kyrie to LA” idea.

The former New York Knicks big man tweeted Saturday that Kyrie Irving should reunite with LeBron James on the Los Angeles Lakers when he makes his anticipated free agency decision this summer.

Charles Oakley spent the climax of his 19-year career playing with the New York Knicks, which makes his about-face on this topic all the more perplexing.

Oakley was with the Knicks from the 1988-89 season to the 1997-98, and he averaged his career-high in points during that juncture.

Kyrie Irving, who is currently getting in playoff mode with the Boston Celtics as the regular season winds down, could be a suitor for the Knicks' backcourt by the time next year rolls around.

New York would have a hometown essence for the New Jersey-bred Irving. The Knicks, however, did acquire second-year point guard Dennis Smith Jr. at the trade deadline last month. Head coach David Fizdale and the organization have vowed to make Smith their franchise floor general, which will further complicate Irving's offseason endeavors.

The 26-year-old point guard has a 2019 player option with Boston, meaning that he can opt out of his deal if he so pleases.

Charles Oakley has been low on New York Knicks fans lists in recent years: From being escorted out of a regular season game in 2017 for shoving members of security to now doing some freelance recruiting for the Lakers, one of its most rivaled franchises.

It's safe to say he should probably keep his distance from Madison Square Garden for the moment — regardless of whether or not they lift his previously-incurred ban from the arena.
