In a new interview with Rohan Nadkarni of Sports Illustrated, DeMarcus Cousins discussed his recovery from a torn Achilles, his thoughts on bubble basketball, and his inspiration for producing a new comedy special, “Boogie's Comedy Slam,” for Amazon Prime.

The two-time All-Star center, currently a free agent, said his passion for hosting comedy nights began with a charity show in Sacramento years back:

“Without that first show in Sacramento and the people supporting me the way they did, I probably never would have gotten to this point,” Cousins said.

DeMarcus Cousins cited the influence of another formerly dominant NBA center for his work in comedy: Shaquille O'Neal.

While Cousins admitted he doesn't think he “could go up there and do comedy,” he has had a few memorable interactions with one of comedy's biggest stars and NBA fans, Kevin Hart, including “a moment during a game” this past season featuring another ubiquitous and, let's say, height-challenged courtside personality:

“Kevin Hart and Rich Paul were having a conversation, and they were both standing up. If you know Rich Paul you know how short Rich is. Obviously Kevin is small himself. It was the first time I’d ever seen Kevin Hart look normal next to someone else. I told him that he just kind of gave me a dry laugh like, ‘shut the hell up.'”

However, DeMarcus Cousins said his favorite moment of comedy at an NBA game came during his time playing for the New Orleans Pelicans, when comedian Tony Roberts, a good friend of Cousins, went viral by seamlessly joining the Pelicans' pregame warmups.

Cousins also deemed J.J. Hickson and Travis Outlaw as the funniest teammates he has ever had.

As for basketball, DeMarcus Cousins said “all I can do is work my tail off to get back to where I want to be.”
