The Hasheem Thabeet comeback tour carries on, as Shams Charania of The Athletic reports that Thabeet has signed a contract in the NBA G League:

The terms of the deal as well as the specific affiliate that Thabeet will play for remain unknown.

Thabeet was selected with the second overall pick of the 2009 NBA Draft by the Memphis Grizzlies, but he struggled to gain a foothold in the league.

The former University of Connecticut star showed some promise on the defensive end by averaging 1.3 blocks on just 13 minutes per game during his rookie season. However, he was deemed as an offensive liability for his lack of footwork and incredulous mid-range shot selection.

In just his second season, Thabeet was traded to the Houston Rockets, and at the conclusion of his fifth season, he had played for four different franchises. The 7-footer was out of the league after the 2013-14 campaign. However, he never lost his desire to return to basketball.

Thabeet has frequently mentioned that Memphis–who already had Marc Gasol as the franchise center at the time that Thabeet was drafted–was an imperfect landing spot for him to begin his NBA career, and he has consistently been playing and working out since 2016.

Rumors of Thabeet's potential return to the NBA began to pick up more steam this summer. Earlier this month, Thabeet earned a workout with the Golden State Warriors.

Though Thabeet was unable to secure a contract, his dream persists. The G League will provide Thabeet with the platform to prove himself to executives around the NBA.
