Jeff Van Gundy is not afraid to speak his mind, to the dismay of many NBA fans. The former head coach of the New York Knicks and Houston Rockets always has something to say about the modern game and has a very big platform to voice his thoughts. As the color commentator for the NBA playoffs opening game between the Utah Jazz and Dallas Mavericks, he proposed a rule change for 3-pointers.

After Jazz star Donovan Mitchell made a triple off the backboard, Van Gundy told play-by-play commentator Beth Mowins that it should be worth two points. He claims that banking in a deep shot removes luck from the equation, hence it is worth less than a normal triple. Although NBA players make way more threes without using the backboard than with it, Van Gundy's take is hilarious.

Apparently, the distance matters very little when taking a shot from deep. As if they aren't difficult enough at the NBA level, it should be a penalty to use the glass? Even if players use the backboard when they aren't trying to, it should be worth the normal three points.

Van Gundy likely stands alone with this take, but that won't mean he believes it any less. He has had some funny moments and astute observations as an announcer for NBA games but also some very bad moments. Whether he is right or wrong, he is not one to flop when giving his opinions.

The Jazz and Mavs kicked off the 2022 NBA playoffs with a tight contest. Utah took the win over the Luka Doncic-less Mavericks by a score of 99-93.
