With reports recently confirming that the NBPA has just approved December 22 as the new start date of the NBA season, it only follows that the league will also look to make the necessary schedule revisions in terms of the opening of the free agency window.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski confirms that both the NBA and the NBPA will move up the start of free agency:

This makes a lot of sense, and is clearly the next logical step now that the start date of the NBA season has been finalized. Teams require ample time to finalize their roster prior to the start of training camp on December 1, which at this point is less than a month away. For free agents, it is also urgent that they get as much time as possible to make their decision on which team to join. This decision will have a tremendous impact on their future (and their families as well), so rushing it could lead to disaster.

There was some doubt as to whether the new NBA season was going to tip off near Christmas Day. A number of prominent players raised their concerns about the same, citing the fact that the extremely shortened offseason does not provide them enough time to rest and recuperate. Some even lobbied to move the tip-off date to Martin Luther King Day in January.

It is clear that at this point, the NBPA has reached an amenable agreement with the NBA on the December 22 tip-off. We should get news about the new date of the free agency soon, and this will certainly have a significant impact on what has been an unprecedented offseason.
