The NBA has just released an official league-wide memorandum pertaining to the coronavirus tests that all NBA teams are currently requiring.

According to the NBA, teams are being advised not to test players and employees that are asymptomatic. This is via Tim Bontemps of ESPN.

The memo states that, “for the time being, it is not appropriate in the current public health environment to regularly test all players and staff for the coronavirus.”

Teams were instructed to make any decisions on testing any players or staff “in consultation with an infectious disease specialist, and in consideration of the patient’s individual circumstances and guidance on testing related to COVID-19 from the [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] and from the local health authority in the team’s market.”

This recent development is in line with the criticism received by some NBA teams who tested most, if not all members of its organization. This is even more relevant for some teams who were able to test their personnel at the onset of the pandemic when testing kits were scarce.

The availability of testing kits have since improved significantly, but so has the suspected cases throughout the nation. As such, the NBA is trying to do its bit in conserving the available tests for people who might actually need them.

To be clear, the NBA memo states that teams are advised not to test players and personnel that are not showing any symptoms. It goes without saying that they should follow the necessary testing and quarantine procedures for those who might exhibit such symptoms.
