Former NBA star Metta World Peace is quite familiar with Kobe Bryant and Tracy McGrady since he had the chance to become teammates with the two iconic scorers.
World Peace recently appeared in an interview with Basketball Network, where he was asked who among Kobe and T-Mac, two cerebral clutch performers, he would trust with the final shot with the game on the line.
MWP admitted that he would still go with the late Los Angeles Lakers legend based on his winning pedigree alone. He, however, said it could have been a different story had McGrady stayed healthy over the course of his illustrious career.
“I mean you always gonna go with Kobe because Kobe had five rings and you’re just going by the numbers. Now, in their prime it’s hard, they was really good. Tracy got hurt, so with Tracy you know his back and his knees were so bad it just gave out early so you didn’t really get a chance to see how great Tracy was, but obviously he’s a Hall-of-Famer.”
World Peace, who was still known by his original name Ron Artest at the time, played one season with the Houston Rockets in 2008-09. McGrady missed most of that year due to injuries so he and MWP did not have a lot of floor time together. Still, the one-time Defensive Player of the Year winner understands how elite T-Mac truly was in his prime.
Metta World Peace signed with the Lakers the following season and helped Kobe win the NBA title, memorably hitting the crown-clinching shot against the Boston Celtics.
McGrady may not have reached the same level of success that Kobe achieved, but he will forever be remembered as one of the most clutch players of his generation. Who could forget his 13 points in 33 seconds against the San Antonio Spurs?
Tracy McGrady was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2017, while Kobe Bryant will be posthumously inducted this May.
