Retired NBA icon Michael Jordan, together with the Jordan Brand, recently pledged to donate $100 million over the next 10 years to causes aimed to fight racial injustice.

A rather neutral figure when it comes to social issues over the last few years, His Airness bared that he's had enough of the country's blatant racial prejudice following the unjust killing of George Floyd at the hands of the police.

“We have been beaten down (as African Americans) for so many years. It sucks your soul. You can’t accept it anymore. This is a tipping point. We need to make a stand. We’ve got to be better as a society regarding race,” the NBA legend passionately said, per Rick Bonnell of The Observer.

Michael Jordan also cited the importance of education in terms of shaping the minds of the youth when it comes to racial equality.

“We have encountered racism to be somewhat acceptable in certain circles. We’ve got to understand at an early age (that can’t be tolerated). Education is such an important part of societal change,” the 6-time NBA champion added.

Jordan has drawn flak in the past for refusing to use his platform to govern societal change. As seen in ESPN's 10-part docu-series “The Last Dance”, MJ once refused to publicly endorse Harvey Gantt, a black Democrat running for Senate in 1990 in his native North Carolina.

Back then, Jordan even uttered the controversial phrase “Republicans wear Nikes too,” which again put him in hot water. Now retired from basketball and widely considered as the NBA's GOAT, it's nice to see Jordan finally maximize his stature for the greater good.

For what it's worth, Jordan's supposed heir apparent, LeBron James, has long been a strong voice when it comes to issues of racism and unequal treatment over the years.
