The debate over whether basketball players should be required to be one year removed from high school is now more relevant than ever. On one hand, there are high school players that feel they are ready to make the jump to the NBA. Then there are others who could use the college years to mature both physically and mentally.

However, with the current rules of NBA eligibility, both players would need to either go to college or play overseas before heading into the league. During a recent appearance on The Sideline Podcast, legendary Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski said he would actually support a rule change to allow players to go straight into the NBA:

“My sense is it’s not working for anyone,” Silver said at the time. “It’s not working for the college coaches and athletic directors I hear from. They’re not happy with the current system. And I know our teams aren’t happy either, in part because they don’t necessarily think the players who are coming into the league are getting the kind of training that they would expect to see.”

It may come as a shock to hear Coach Krzyzewski actually support a rule change that would undoubtedly affect his program more than most teams in the nation. It is no secret that Duke is one of the premier teams when it comes to producing NBA talent.

However, the change would allow those pro-ready guys to fulfill their dream of going to the league rather than wasting their time in college. Meanwhile, colleges would be able to develop players who want to be in the program for more than one year.
