Esports has completely taken the world by storm as more and more people have been staying in tune with the latest developments and trends in the video game market. To get in on the bandwagon, the NBA partnered with Take-Two Interactive to jointly organize the NBA 2K League. It began its inaugural season on May 1.

Wednesday, the league announced that four more NBA teams will join the current 17-team pool for the second season, with the Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves joining the fray.

NBA 2K League Managing Director Brendan Donohue expressed his excitement over the recent development.

“Welcoming these four world-class organizations and their passionate fanbases to the NBA 2K League is an exciting moment not only for the league, but for the entire 2K community,” said NBA 2K League Managing Director Brendan Donohue.  “From their innovative spirit to their global reach, we know each of these teams will be a tremendous addition, and we are thrilled that this growth offers the opportunity for new players, coaches and support staff to join the league.”

As much as it is different from the way basketball should be played, establishing this esports league is a concerted effort by the NBA to reach out to every fan base that the league has in every corner of the world.

With the NBA, WNBA, and G League already in place, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver believes that the 2K League will bring in more excitement to the game of basketball.

“We view this as the same way as those other leagues,” Silver said at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden. “It's something that we're going to develop over a very long time, and we're building this league as something that's going to be around forever.”

The winner of the NBA 2K League's inaugural season will receive a staggering $1 million cash prize.
