The NBA is gearing up for a return to the hardwood in July after the board of governors overwhelmingly approved a return-to-play plan featuring 22 out of the league's 30 teams.

But while there was more urgency in finding a way to conclude the NBA season, there is less of an onus for the league's minor league ranks.

Shams Charania of The Athletic reported Thursday the G League canceled the remainder of its season.

This is not much of a surprise.

There are eight NBA teams whose seasons have officially come to an end. It does not make much sense for the G League to seek a return given the current circumstances.

However, the cancellation of the G League season should not take away from the strides the developmental league has made this year.

Aside from allowing journeyman players to work their way back to the NBA, the G League has become an alternative to playing college ball.

Top high school recruit Jalen Green passed on a number of scholarships in order to sign with a G League team. Green was followed by other top recruits such as Isaiah Todd and Daishen Nix.

Obviously, going the “professional” route allows these players to be paid fairly significant money while also giving them the opportunity to get more accustomed to the NBA game.

Moreover, the G League continues to expand. Charania previously reported former NBA veteran Brian Shaw will coach the new select team featuring Green.

Commissioner Adam Silver also announced the G League will be adding a team in Mexico City beginning next year.

Needless to say, this has been a banner season for the G League.
