There has been a clear disconnect between NBA players and officials this year, and it has gotten so bad that they have set up a meeting between the National Basketball Players Association and the National Basketball Referees Association that will take place on Saturday at the All-Star weekend.

In a joint statement released by both associations they laid out what will be discussed:

According to the release, there will be five key points that will be the main talking points,

  • On court communication and demeanor
  • Perception in media, optics, and reality of issues between players and officials
  • Respect for the game rules, and their consistent enforcement
  • Tactics for de-escalation of tension from each side.
  • Equality of treatment for all players and officials.

There has been a lot of complaining from players to officials not only in the game but after the game in the media scrums.

One of the most vocal voices about the poor officiating has been from Draymond Green of the Golden State Warriors. Earlier this year he sat down with Anthony Slater of the Athletic to discuss his issues with the officials.

“It’s bad,” Green said after Saturday’s win over the Los Angeles Clippers. “It’s horrible, it’s really bad. I don’t know why it is. But I think it’s ridiculous. It’s ruining the game. … It should be one of, if not the main priority, to be solved. It definitely should.”

He also went on to say one of the issues is there are a lot of younger new officials and that has created some issues.

“They can get a new crop (of referees), a whole new crop,” he said. “Too many personal things going on. Too much me against you. It just don’t work that way.”

It looks like Green did get his wish, and they are trying to solve the issue between the players and the referees, it will just be interesting to see how much actually gets done at this meeting.
