After 14 NBA seasons, 38-year-old Spanish point guard Jose Calderon announced his retirement and his intention to join the NBA Players Association as a special assistant to the union's executive director, Michelle Roberts.

Now, Calderon's countryman and teammate with the Spanish national team, Pau Gasol reacted on Twitter, thanking the point guard for the time the two were able to spend together on the court.

Pau Gasol signed a one-year deal with the Portland Trail Blazers last offseason, but a foot injury has kept him off of the floor thus far this 2019-20.

Jose Calderon came to the NBA in 2005, playing for the Toronto Raptors until being traded to the Detroit Pistons in 2013. He then played for five different teams — the Dallas Mavericks, New York Knicks, Los Angles Lakers, Atlanta Hawks and Cleveland Cavaliers — before returning to Detroit in 2018 for his final season.

Over the course of his career, Calderon averaged 8.9 points and 5.8 assists per game while shooting 47.2 percent from the field and 40.7 percent from deep. His 2008-2009 season could be considered the best of his career, as he averaged 12.8 points and 8.9 assists per game and notably led the league in free throw percentage, knocking down 98.1 percent of his attempts from the line.

Gasol and Calderon have played together in four Olympics from 2004 through 2016. The pair won Olympic silver medals together in 2008 and 2012, and a bronze in 2016. They also won gold medals in the 2006 FIBA World Cup and the EuroBasket tournament.
