When the day arrives that he has to hang up his jersey and sneakers for good, Quincy Pondexter plans to don a coat and tie and sit along the sidelines as a coach.

Per Jabari Young of The Athletic, Pondexter shared how one of the key events that influenced his decision to become a coach one day. He noted that the desire to lead a team started in 2015. But a more recent one occurred while he was reviewing the game close game between the New Orleans Pelicans and the Brooklyn Nets. He tagged the game the “Worst last two minutes of basketball I’ve ever seen.”

“One day,” Pondexter said, like a youth discovering his career aspiration for the first time, “I want to be the man on the sideline that not only has a positive influence but a helluva coach. And someone that gets wins.”

Pondexter is currently an unrestricted free agent. Last year, he spent the season with the San Antonio Spurs where legendary head coach Gregg Popovich noticed that the 31-year-old has the potential to be a good coach one day.

“Yeah, I can see it,” Popovich said. “And you can see it when he’s listening to any of the coaches or watching the game on the bench and seeing what we say to (players). You can see that he’s processing, and he’s highly intelligent by himself without basketball. So, he can very well be one of those guys that would really enjoy that.”

Indeed, it's going to be an exciting time for Pondexter for the next few years. The passion is well-intact. He simply has to work extra hard to achieve this dream of his.
