The offseason has barely started for Russell Westbrook but the Washington Wizards star already has his next move planned out–outside the basketball court that is. According to reports, Russ will be teaming up with Jordan Brand to produce a basketball documentary revolving around the hoop culture in Los Angeles.

This comes via Bleacher Report on Twitter:

As the above report mentions, the documentary will be titled “Why Not?” and will be focused on the basketball culture in the Crenshaw neighborhood where Russell Westbrook grew up. Much like Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James whose new film “Space Jam: A New Legacy” is set to hit theaters next month, Westbrook himself has now decided to take his shot at the film industry.

The Wizards star shed some light on the project and why he believes this should have a significant impact on the African American community:

“A lot of the youth in Black and Brown communities look at the tech space as an almost impossible field to exist within,'” Russell Westbrook said, via Angelique Jackson of Variety. “They don’t often see themselves represented at the major tech companies of the world and they don’t see it as the ‘cool’ thing to do. Well, ‘Why Not?'

“‘Why Not' is a mantra I live by. Because I believe it is important to empower the next generation and encourage them to never give up. Why can’t young Black kids in untapped neighborhoods like Crenshaw get exposed to tech? This film is that story, and I hope it inspires kids in marginalized communities around the world.”

Westbrook's documentary may not be at the same level as LeBron's “Space Jam” or even Michael Jordan's “The Last Dance” docu-series, but it looks like the Wizards star is aiming for a more culturally relevant piece. Russell Westbrook has always been a prominent voice in the Black community, and this appears to be the next step in his journey. Can't wait.
