Stan Van Gundy is following in his brother's footsteps and joining ESPN as an NBA analyst, according to Ben Cafardo of ESPN. It had recently been reported that this move was happening, and now it's official.

Van Gundy told Cafardo:

“I am excited about the new challenge of providing analysis and opinion for ESPN.”

I think it's safe to say that Van Gundy will start firing off much better quotes once he begins. Much like his brother, Jeff, Stan has never been one to bite his tongue. Even if he's not always right in his assessments, expect candid and honest opinions from Van Gundy on the air.

Van Gundy was hired in 2014 to be the head coach and president of basketball operations for the Detroit Pistons. But after four seasons, a record of 152-176, and only one playoff appearance (a sweep at the hands of the Cleveland Cavaliers), the Pistons were ready to move on from Van Gundy.

The Van Gundy-ESPN pairing is interesting considering the criticism Van Gundy had of the network following their coverage of a story where LaVar Ball criticized Los Angeles Lakers head coach Luke Walton. Van Gundy made it difficult for ESPN to get extra access to him following the incident, but he did not completely cut off the network.

But that looks to be water under the bridge at this point. Van Gundy should make for an entertaining analyst. He will bring honest and unfiltered opinions to ESPN's NBA coverage.
