Team executives and player-agents around the league have started to feel the pressure, frustrated with the lack of information from the league after several weeks in limbo. They have started to push for an outright cancellation of the 2019-20 season in hopes that everyone can focus on what to expect for the 2020-21 campaign, according to Jabari Young of CNBC Sports.

Agents and executives said team owners are concerned with liability issues and don’t know whether or not to give up on the current season.

If the regular season is canceled but the postseason is still underway, non-playoff teams will lose any chance of making money from those games, but also save themselves the cost of organizing them.

A Western Conference team has already lost $50 million and does not have much incentive to restart the season at this point.

“What [owners] are saying is, ’If we return, where is the revenue that is going to justify the additional cost of returning?” one team executive said. “They are looking at the cost side versus the revenue side. What revenue comes in now?”

If the NBA does return this season, it would surely be in closed arenas without any fans, shaving a massive part of potential revenue.

“These owners aren’t just sitting there with an ATM that’s printing more than ever before,” said former Memphis Grizzlies president of business operations Andy Dolich. “Some of them are looking at vast losses outside of just their basketball team.”

Teams want a sense of direction, which they have yet to get from the league in this period of limbo. The opening up of practice facilities is more of a safety measure to assure players in “open” states don’t go to commercial gyms or other facilities where they may be infected with coronavirus.

At the same time, the league office feels it must fire every bullet in the chamber before giving up on the prospect of playing again.

“It is the responsibility of the league office to explore all options for a return to play this season,” a spokesperson told CNBC in a statement. “We owe that to our fans, teams, players, partners and all who love the game. While our top priority remains everyone’s health and well-being, we continue to evaluate all options to finish this season. At the same time, we are intensely focused on addressing the potential impact of COVID-19 on the 2020-21 season.”
