The Houston Rockets are reportedly looking to sign free agent guard Tyler Johnson to bolster their All-Star backcourt featuring former NBA MVPs Russell Westbrook and James Harden.

Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle reported that the Rockets, along with the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers, are interested in inking the 6-foot-3 combo guard for the NBA's restarted campaign in Orlando, Florida. The season resumption is set to kick off on July 30 in Walt Disney World if all goes according to plan.

Johnson last played for the Phoenix Suns before getting waived shortly after the NBA's trade deadline last February. Originally an undrafted free agent out of Fresno State in 2014, Johnson earned his stripes within the Miami Heat organization, rising up through their G League affiliate to land a two-year contract that expired during the summer of 2016. After which, the Heat matched a $50 million offer sheet handed out by the Brooklyn Nets, keeping him in Miami.

Johnson was traded to the Suns in February 2019, spending a total of 44 games with the Western Conference franchise between last season and the 2019-20 campaign before his release four months ago.

In his six-year NBA career, Johnson has averaged 10.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game, all while shooting 43.0 percent from the field and 35.8 percent from 3-point range. He has made 301 appearances, 71 of which as a starter.

The Rockets, entering the NBA's suspended season in mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic, possess the sixth-best record in the Western Conference (40-24). They also boast the leading number of 3-point attempts and makes per game in the league.

At the trade deadline, the Rockets gave up starting center Clint Capela in order to fortify the wing position, adding sharpshooting 3-and-D stretch forward Robert Covington from the Minnesota Timberwolves.
