The New York Knicks soap opera continues, this time in relationship to D'Angelo Russell.

While the Knicks made a big move to acquire another first-round draft pick on Thursday, the team didn't acquire D'Angelo Russell. New York fans are also coming off a week in which the team fired former president Steve Mills and hired former agent Leon Rose to take his place.

Moreover, Knicks owner James Dolan declared on Thursday afternoon he would not be selling the team in spite of renewed public outcry. D'Angelo Russell wasn't the team's only worry.

Just to cap things off, Danny Abriano of SNY reported there were members of the Knicks organization who believed the team was making significant progress towards acquiring D'Angelo Russell from the Golden State Warriors before Mills was fired on Tuesday:

As of Thursday morning, the Knicks still hadn't closed the door on the possibility of trading for Russell, SNY's Ian Begley reported. Sources also said that before president Steve Mills was fired, some in the organization believed that significant progress was made toward a Russell deal.

Golden State ended up trading D'Angelo Russell to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for swingman Andrew Wiggins and multiple draft picks. The Knicks lost out again.

Of course, there is no telling whether acquiring Russell would have proven to be the savvy basketball decision. Nevertheless, it bears wondering whether the Warriors pulled away from trade discussions amid all the internal strife in the Knicks organization.

Alternatively, interim president Scott Perry and co. may simply have changed their focus. Mills previously suggested he was reluctant to deal forward Marcus Morris, but the Knicks ended up dealing Morris to the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for Maurice Harkless and a 2020 first-round pick.

Regardless, the calamity surrounding this week has been rather befitting of the season for the Knicks.
