The Minnesota Timberwolves have been determined to make changes and improve their roster amid a disastrous season. Having traded veteran point guard Jeff Teague, the Timberwolves are still looking for another missing piece to their puzzle.
According to Kevin O'Connor of The Ringer, that may be Orlando Magic forward Aaron Gordon. Minnesota reportedly inquired about Gordon at some point this season, though clearly talks didn't go anywhere.
It’s unclear what the Wolves precisely offered for Gordon, but they have been shopping Robert Covington, though they won't let him go unless they get a good return. Gordon would check that box.
Gordon has developed into more of a playmaker in recent years, using his big-man ballhandling to get to his spots on the court and create for others. In a world where Anthony Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns are often tasked with initiating their own offense, having a playmaker to help them wouldn't hurt.
The Magic are at a crossroads, considering Gordon and the injured Jonathan Isaac play the same position. Orlando will soon have to decide who to stick with, and given that Gordon is the healthy one, the club could choose to part with him, now only a week away from the trade deadline.
The Magic are the seventh seed in the East, but they have lost the last four games and have only won three of their last 10 outings, quickly slipping out of position at a whopping 10 games back from the sixth-seeded Philadelphia 76ers.
If they do decide it's time to sell, they could do well with a package revolving around Covington, a 3-and-D specialist who can play at either forward spot and provide the building block for something new.
