There will be no cutting down nets. “One Shining Moment” will not be played as the confetti falls. March Madness will not be a national phenomena this year.

The NCAA canceled both the men's and women's basketball tournaments in light of the coronavirus pandemic, just days before Selection Sunday.

While no single champion can be crowned, the Florida senate is championing their athletes. The state senate passed a resolution-naming the Florida State Seminoles the NCAA men's basketball champions for 2020

Florida State won the regular-season title in the ACC this season and was crowned league tournament champions as the No. 1 seed after it was canceled.

Within the resolution, it states, “a resolution declaring the Florida State University Seminoles basketball team, by virtue of tremendous skill on the court and the heart and spirit shown by the players and coaches this basketball season, the 2020 National College Athletic Association basketball champions by default upon cancellation of the NCAA tournament due to concerns raised by the spread of the novel coronavirus COVID-19.”

The Seminoles went 16-4 in ACC play and were undefeated at home this past season. They were angling for a No. 1 seed prior to the cancelation of the tournament.

Plenty of coaches and media outlets are looking for ways to reward amateur athletes for their effort and dedication this season. Arizona State head coach Bobby Hurley said the NCAA should still release a 68-team field.

Of course, there would be a big asterisk on the bracket given the cancelation of conference tournaments.

Regardless of what happens on a national level, the Florida state senate took matters into their own hands. The Seminoles are champions, at least in their eyes.
