Neo: The World Ends With You follows up on the cult classic title The World Ends With You for the Nintendo DS, first released in 2007.

The growing popularity of the original TWEWY would eventually see it released on other platforms. It was first ported to iOS in 2012, to Android in 2014, and then finally, to the Nintendo Switch in 2018. Now, SQUARE ENIX understood that the game's appeal shouldn't be limited to just Nintendo platforms, as they release Neo: TWEWY on more consoles just one.

Neo: The World Ends With You‘s announcement trailer first came out on November 23, 2020. It was unveiled on the game's official website, and coincided with the original game's anime adaptation trailer. It was a big day for TWEWY fans and we're finally getting the game soon enough.

While the game acts as a sequel to the original – featuring the same Reaper's Game as the first one – Neo: TWEWY will have a lot of significant changes in both gameplay and narrative. Hence, Tatsuya Kando says the game was named as “new” instead of as TWEWY 2. The game will be fully 3D, and will have a different combat system compared to the original. However, Neo continues the usage of pins as capacitors for powers in the game. The “Noise” enemies from the original will also be making a comeback.
