The Brooklyn Nets comfortably landed on Jacque Vaughn after the firing of Kenny Atkinson, but there's already a bevy of speculation on who should be his successor at the helm. Names like Tyronn Lue, Mark Jackson, and even Gregg Popovich have come afloat in the conversation. Another is Brett Brown — an intriguing, yet bad choice to take over as head coach if he's fired by the Philadelphia 76ers.

John Hollinger of The Athletic wrote about how Brown could be a potential candidate, considering he falls right in that same Popovich family tree that delivered other NBA head coaches like Mike Budenholzer and James Borrego.

“One name that nobody has mentioned yet that would seem an obvious candidate, should he become free, is Brett Brown. Marks has drawn heavily from the Popovich-Budenholzer family tree in building out his staff in Brooklyn to date (including Atkinson and Vaughn, naturally), and Brown would be the most prominent available member from that tree should things go sideways in Philadelphia.”

The ties to general manager Sean Marks, another Popovich disciple, are strong — yet that should not make him a frontrunner for the job.

Brown has done a remarkable job as the coach who guided the Sixers through “The Process” — but that's where it all stops. His issues with high-level talent have started to show, as the Sixers went from a team in development to one with high expectations.

Not only has Brown struggled to incorporate new signings like Al Horford, but he also has the on-court clash between Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid hovering over his head. Should the Sixers fall short of the Eastern Conference Finals this postseason, his job could very well be on the hot seat.

Take those same issues to Brooklyn, which is now virtually run by two veteran max-level superstars in Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant, and the Nets have a huge issue on their hands.

Irving and Durant have been known as moody and fickle through the latter stretch of their careers. They also brought along a third wheel in best friend DeAndre Jordan, who feels he should start over Jarrett Allen and is currently doing so.

The Nets are a train that is running on autopilot at the moment. Take a coach like Brown, who has been unable to assert his power over stars like Embiid and Jimmy Butler, and Brooklyn will have hell on wheels.

The Nets need a coach that already has the respect of Irving and Durant and one that can make decisions without worrying about being questioned like Atkinson was this season. Regardless of the ties Brown has with Marks as a fellow Popovich pupil, he's just not the one for this job.
