The participants of Sunday night's NBA Slam Dunk Contest put on a show for the fans. It wasn't exactly the most memorable Dunk Contest we've seen, but at least it wasn't mired by too much controversy. The 2011 edition of the Dunk Contest that starred new Brooklyn Nets recruit Blake Griffin, however, was a different story altogether.

A decade ago (!), Blake brought out a Kia Optima in the finale of the Dunk Contest. However, what was supposed to be the greatest dunk in Dunk Contest history turned out to be a disappointment. Recently, Griffin looked back at that moment as he admitted how he should have done much better than just jumping over the hood of the Kia:

“Next time you see a Kia Optima, just take a look at the car and get an idea of how high that is,” Griffin said in a recent B/R AMA feature. “I should have jumped over the whole thing and Baron Davis who was throwing me the ball, I don't know what I was thinking. People don't love that dunk and I get it. I gotta be better next time.”

First off, we can't agree with Blake more here. It was a letdown, to say the least. Looking at the replay several times, though, we're not totally sure if he could have actually jumped over the car (no way he was clearing both the Kia and Baron Davis).

Be that as it may, what stands out in his statement above is how Griffin said that he “gotta be better next time.” What does he mean? Does he intend to join in on next year's Dunk Contest? At 31, Blake Griffin can still get up there, but there's no denying that he's lost a bit of bounce at this point. Still, it's an undeniably intriguing prospect.
