The Brooklyn Nets have released a statement on the D'Angelo Russell marijuana incident.

Russell was caught with marijuana in his luggage on Wednesday at a New York airport while traveling to Louisville. The Nets guard was charged with possession of marijuana under 50 grams.

“We have been made aware of the situation involving D’Angelo Russell and are in the process of gathering more information at this time.”

Russell and the Nets lost to the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round of the playoffs in five games. DLo, who will become a restricted free agent this summer, made his first All-Star team this season.

As a restricted free agent, Russell can sign an offer sheet with another team if he wants to. The Nets would then have 48 hours to match the offer sheet or let Russell walk.

Brooklyn has cap space this summer to sign not one, but two max contract players in free agency. They are expected to pursue Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, Kawhi Leonard and Jimmy Butler.

In 81 games in 2018-19, Russell averaged 21.1 points, 3.9 rebounds and 7.0 assists per contest. He shot 43.4 percent from the field, 36.9 percent from beyond the arc and 78.0 percent from the free-throw line. Nets GM Sean Marks and head coach Kenny Atkinson can't be happy with what Russell did right now.
