Brooklyn Nets All-Star point guard D'Angelo Russell was cited for marijuana possession at LaGuardia Airport in New York on Wednesday, according to A.J. Perez of USA TODAY Sports.

Russell was reportedly questioned by police. The Nets guard was flying from New York to Louisville:

Russell was questioned by police after a routine search flagged what initially appeared to be a can of Arizona Iced Tea. The can had a hidden compartment where marijuana was discovered.

An NBA player would be required to enter the league's marijuana program if the player “has been convicted of (including a plea of guilty, no contest or nolo contendere to) the use or possession of marijuana in violation of the law,” according to the current collective bargaining agreement. There's no suspension until the third violation of the marijuana policy.

A Port Authority spokesman released more details:

The Nets released this statement on the matter:

Russell becomes a restricted free agent this summer. This is definitely not a good look for the lefty, who had his best season as a pro in 2018-19 with the Nets.

Russell averaged 21.1 points, 3.9 rebounds and 7.0 assists per game this season. He shot 43.4 percent from the field, 36.9 percent from beyond the arc and 78.0 percent from the free-throw line. The Nets made the playoffs this season thanks to Russell's stellar play. They lost to the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round of the playoffs in five games.
