Brooklyn Nets general manager Sean Marks says Kevin Durant's Instagram post committing to Brooklyn “was news to all of us in the office.”

Marks and his staff were under the assumption they were going to teleconference call with Durant once free agency opened on June 30 or meet face-to-face with the two-time Finals MVP, who was already in New York City.

Once Marks and the Nets saw Durant post on his Boardroom Instagram account he was committing to Brooklyn, excitement was in the air.

“What we knew was we were either getting a teleconference call with Kevin that night or we were going to potentially get a meeting,” Marks told Evan Roberts and Joe Benigno on WFAN, via Nets Daily. “We’d seen some media reports earlier in the day that Kevin had crossed several teams off his list and we were still one of them (being considered). And those reports were there for everybody to read. And when Kevin posted it on The Boardroom Instagram site, that was news to all of us in the office.”

The Nets had a great summer. They signed All-Stars Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and DeAndre Jordan and also landed two great veteran forwards in Wilson Chandler and Garrett Temple.

Durant was the big catch, though. The New York Knicks were rumored to be the favorites to sign the all-world small forward all season long. The culture the Nets have built under Sean Marks and head coach Kenny Atkinson outweighed the allure of playing in Madison Square Garden.
