The Brooklyn Nets have guaranteed point guard Spencer Dinwiddie's contract for the next season. ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski first reported on the development.

This is a smart move for the Nets as Dinwiddie's $1.65 million contract is definitely a bargain for the team. The young playmaker was included in talks for last year's Most Improved Player award as he normed averages of 12.6 points, 6.6 assists, and 3.2 rebounds per game. The 25-year-old guard was truly a revelation for the Nets but the team's lowly record pulled him out of contention for the award.

Dinwiddie has an excellent assist-to-turnover ratio, which was the driving force for his case. Zack Collura of Nothin' But Nets emphasized on this:

“One of Dinwiddie’s main assets was his ability to take care of the basketball. His 4.09 assist to turnover ratio was good for second best in the NBA. He didn’t just limit turnovers, though. Dinwiddie finished seventh in the NBA in assists, ahead of guys like Chris Paul, Ricky Rubio, and Kemba Walker.”

With Jeremy Lin moving on to the Atlanta Hawks, and D'Angelo Russell hounded by injuries throughout his initial season in Brooklyn, bringing back Dinwiddie to the team is a no-brainer.

The four-year man out of Colorado has also become one of the top clutch players in the NBA. He has been the team's go-to-guy in the crucial moments and has already delivered more than a few game-winners. In one of his best games last season, Dinwiddie torched the Toronto Raptors by putting up 31 points, eight assists, five rebounds, and two steals.

Along with the 6-foot-5 Russell, Dinwiddie also has the size to defend the shooting guard position with his 6-foot-6 frame. If Russell is healthy throughout the upcoming season, he and Dinwiddie will be a force to reckon with in the backcourt.
