It’s been more than a year since Kevin Durant left the Golden State Warriors to join the Brooklyn Nets in a move that was as stunning as his decision to join the Warriors three seasons earlier.

The Achilles injury he suffered in the 2019 NBA Finals against the Toronto Raptors prevented him from playing for the Nets last season, and deprived fans of a return to the Bay Area. But this season, with Durant healthy, the 10-time All Star will now return to the team and city that he helped win two championships.

The Athletic’s Shams Charania and Anthony Slater report that Durant and the Nets are scheduled to play the Warriors on February 13, which will mark the first time that the 32-year old will play against his former team.

In his three seasons with the Warriors, Durant won two championships and two Finals MVP awards, and was a three-time All Star. He averaged 25.8 points, 7.1 rebounds, 5.4 assists, and 1.5 blocks while 52.4% shooting from the field and 38.4% from beyond the arc in 208 games for Golden State.

But more than the numbers and individual awards, playing for the Warriors helped Durant become a champion, which eluded him during his first nine seasons in the league with the Oklahoma City Thunder. It’s interesting to see how Warriors fans will welcome Durant back in the Bay Area, and how well he’ll perform against his former team and old teammates Steph Curry and Draymond Green.

But more than being a reunion, the game should also be a thrilling matchup between two of the best teams in their respective conferences, with Durant looking to help Kyrie Irving and the Nets to a deep playoff run and the Warriors aiming to return to contention after finishing with the league’s worst record last season.
