Athletes and the use of marijuana is a controversial topic amongst sports fans, media, and players. Some people are all for it, while others are very much against it. Brooklyn Nets superstar Kevin Durant recently made it clear which side of the fence he is on.

“To me, it clears the distractions out of your brain a little bit,” Durant stated in an interview with David Letterman. “Settles you down. It’s like having a glass of wine.”

He later admitted to being high during the interview.

The interview itself was rather comical. But Kevin Durant is emerging as an advocate for marijuana use in professional sports. Durant proclaimed during the interview that he wants to change the narrative around athletes and marijuana. He understands that it is often viewed in a negative light.

“It's confusing to a lot of people. You can look around this city… in the next year or two there is going to be dispensaries everywhere.”

However, Durant believes it can be vital to the recovery of athletes during the course of a long season. It wasn't that long ago that athletes were prohibited from the use of cannabis. But the narrative is already changing since the NBA quit testing players for it.

It will be interesting to see if Kevin Durant continues his activism for marijuana in professional sports. He is obviously passionate about the situation.

The issue of marijuana in professional sports will be a hot button topic as well over the next couple of years.
