Kevin Durant of the Brooklyn Nets is the latest player to join the league's health and safety protocols. He joins his teammate James Harden and others who have been in the protocol for the past few days. He is the eighth Nets player in the protocols.

Brooklyn is currently 21-8 on the season and a major part is that is due to how well Kevin Durant has played. He's arguably having his best season yet as he's averaging 29.7 points per game and 7.9 rebounds.

This is a tough loss for the Nets, with the loss of some of the other players that they have already had to deal with, they're now even more shorthanded than they already were. Durant has been playing minutes this season that he probably should not be playing due to the Nets' lack of depth.  Durant can clearly play at a high level regardless if he plays 35-plus minutes a night in the regular season, but it's not the smartest idea from the Nets' standpoint.

Fortunately for Brooklyn, they have a three-game lead over the second-place Chicago Bulls and Milwaukee Bucks in the Eastern Conference. Durant should be able to come back sometime within the next 10 days due to him being vaccinated and only having to test negative twice in a 24-hour span. They're taking on the Orlando Magic on Saturday in a game that they could still possibly win even without Durant. Unfortunately, they're on a back-to-back as they are going to take on the Denver Nuggets on Sunday which could be a tough game for them to win without Durant.
