Even the most ardent Brooklyn Nets fans might struggle to say with straight faces that the team is certainly going to be in the playoffs. Sean Marks, however, is of a different breed. Marks was recently in a conference call with Nets season ticket holders and when asked about Brooklyn’s chances of making the top eight in the Eastern Conference by the end of the regular season, he simply said that he sees hardly a reason why his team can’t at least be a serious contender for a playoff spot (h/t Nets Daily).

“I don’t see a reason why we can’t make a push. Isn’t that the objective here? We’re not sitting here saying we plan to win 20 games! So we see where it will go.”

The Nets have not made the postseason since 2015, back when Brook Lopez was still Brook Lopez and was the go-to-guy in Brooklyn. After that, the Nets ate a steady diet of losses, winning just 69 games and losing 177 over the next three seasons. That stretch includes the 2017-18 campaign in which Brooklyn went just 28-54.

Despite a star-studded free agency this summer, the Nets swung badly on acquiring a significant addition. If anything, they signed Ed Davis, Dante Cunningham, and Shabazz Napier, players who are serviceable but not necessarily the types that will strike down fear down the spine of the likes of the Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers, and the Toronto Raptors.

This coming season could also just be a bridge for Brooklyn to a better 2019-20 campaign, as the team is expected to be a major player in next summer’s free agency.
