Spencer Dinwiddie has agreed to a three-year extension with the Brooklyn Nets, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Spencer Dinwiddie is getting a three-year, $34.5 million extension with the team. The contract has a player-option in it as well.

This is a great move by the Nets, as Spencer Dinwiddie would have become an unrestricted free agent after the season had he not signed an extension. The guard was expected to command a lot of interest from rival teams if he had hit the open market.

Dinwiddie comes off the bench for the Nets, but he has proven to be a more efficient player and requires less maintenance than starting point guard D'Angelo Russell. Dinwiddie is averaging 16.9 points, 2.5 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game through 29 games this year for the Nets. The 25-year-old is shooting 47.4 percent from the field, 36.8 percent from the 3-point line and 77.3 percent from the charity stripe.

What does the future hold for D'Angelo Russell now? Russell will enter restricted free agency in the summer of 2019 if Brooklyn offers him a $9.16 million qualifying offer. The former No. 2 overall pick and the Nets didn’t have any discussions on a contract extension this past offseason, and there have been talks around the league that Brooklyn values Dinwiddie more than Russell.
