Spencer Dinwiddie and Kyrie Irving got close with each other after they hung out at All-Star Weekend in 2018 in Los Angeles. The two are now teammates on the Brooklyn Nets.

Irving and Dinwiddie started talking this past December about playing together in New York. Dinwiddie recruited Irving to the Nets.

Kyrie was considering signing with the New York Knicks, but opted to sign with Brooklyn since they have a much brighter future and infrastructure than the Knicks.

Dinwiddie has said that he and Irving started talking last December, with Irving mentioning that New York “might be real fun next year.” Sensing an opening, Dinwiddie tried to sell Irving on the Nets over the New York Knicks. It helps that Brooklyn was closer to contending, winning 42 games and finishing sixth in the East last year (whereas the Knicks were an NBA-worst 17-65).

Dinwiddie and Irving have been friendly since high school, but they weren’t very close until recently. Dinwiddie told HoopsHype that their bond strengthened after they hung out at All-Star Weekend in 2018. Then, they both happened to sign up for the same business course at Harvard in the fall of 2018.

Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant and DeAndre Jordan all signed with the Nets this summer. The three All-Stars are very close friends off the court.

Irving and Durant took less than the max so Brooklyn could sign Jordan to a four-year, $40 million deal. Spencer Dinwiddie deserves a lot of credit for staying in the ear of Irving throughout the 2018-19 season and getting him to come to Brooklyn.
