The Brooklyn Nets announced on Monday that point guard Spencer Dinwiddie underwent successful surgery to repair ligaments in his right thumb.

Spencer Dinwiddie suffered the injury last week against the Orlando Magic. Updates regarding Dinwiddie’s return will be issued as appropriate.

Brooklyn Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie underwent successful surgery today to repair ligaments in his right thumb. The procedure was performed by Dr. Michelle Carlson at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Updates regarding Dinwiddie’s return will be issued as appropriate.

Spencer Dinwiddie reportedly was trying to play through the pain and undergo the surgery in the offseason, but after meeting with multiple specialists, it was determined that surgery was the best course of action to take.

In 49 games this season for the Nets, Dinwiddie is averaging 17.2 points, 2.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game coming off the bench. The 25-year-old is shooting 46.1 percent from the field, 36.6 percent from beyond the arc and 79.5 percent from the free-throw line.

It's a tough blow for Dinwiddie and the Nets, who are 27-24 on the season, good for sixth place in the Eastern Conference standings. Brooklyn signed Dinwiddie to a three-year extension in December worth $34 million.

The hope in Brooklyn is that Spencer Dinwiddie can return within four-to-six weeks.
