Stephen A. Smith has weighed in on the controversy surrounding Brooklyn Nets All-Star D'Angelo Russell, who was cited at a New York airport for possession of marijuana.

The ESPN First Take host took it to Twitter to make everyone know that he heard the news. However, Smith held back on commenting about the issue and said that he will sleep on it before expressing his opinion on their show.

According to the latest reports, authorities at the LaGuardia Airport questioned Russell on Thursday after a routine search discovered marijuana in a hidden compartment of his can of Arizona Iced Tea. He was eventually charged for possession of marijuana under 50 grams.

Russell argued that the bag where the can and marijuana were discovered was his brother's. Meanwhile, the Nets refused to comment about the issue and said in a statement that they are still gathering information about the incident.

According to the NBA's collective bargaining agreement, whenever a player violates the league's marijuana policy for the first time, he enters a “marijuana program.” A second violation warrants a hefty fine of $25,000. If the player violates the policy for a third time, the league can suspend him for five games.

Russell and the Nets are coming off a first-round playoff loss to the Philadelphia 76ers. After winning Game 1 by nine on the road, Brooklyn subsequently lost the next four games.
