Former Nets player Stephon Marbury would love to see current San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich calling the shots for the Brooklyn Nets next season. Given Pop's ties with the Spurs franchise, Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Jason Kidd has emerged as the more likely candidate to take Nets' interim head coach Jacque Vaugn's place.

But as far as “Starbury” is concerned, only the legendary multi-titled tactician can manage superstars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving and command the Nets to a title.

“I think I would probably go with experience and championships with Popovich,” Marbury bared when asked of his preference in the “Heavy with Scoop B Show.” “I think Popovich, he has a great rapport with players. Jason Kidd, I think he will continue to flourish as a coach. But I would go with experience over a coach who has coached for X amount of years.”

Following a three-year stint with the Nets from 1999-2001, Marbury has since retired from the game and has actually ventured into coaching. However, the two-time All-Star guard admits he still needs some more experience before being considered for the job.

“I’m a coach right now and I think people would probably pass on me because there are some things I still am learning as a coach. I think with Popovich being in the position where he’s won multiple championships and he’s built a dynasty over an organization over the NBA, I would probably say that.”

Stephon Marbury was the Nets' best player during his brief stint with the team while they were still in New Jersey. He averaged 23.0 points, 3.1 rebounds, 8.1 assists, and 1.3 steals in 172 games played. He made his mark overseas and is considered a legend in the Chinese Basketball Association.

The current Nets squad, meanwhile, is pegged as immediate contenders next season since Durant and Irving are expected to be 100 percent healed from their respective injuries. The Nets will certainly need to move heaven and earth to pry Popovich away from San Antonio.
