From the composition of their current roster, the Brooklyn Nets are galaxies away from becoming a playoff contender, let alone being a serious threat to win an NBA title. However, the team is eyeing some personnel maneuvers in order to put them in a better position to lure top free agents as soon as the summer of 2019. That’s a year from now, but part of the grand plan of the team’s front office could be shipping Jeremy Lin this offseason, per Brian Lewis of The New York Post, while citing sources. Doing so could give the Nets a bigger financial breathing room right away.

Multiple league sources told The Post they had heard Lin could be dealt this offseason. Orlando is a logical landing spot. Lin played under Magic coach Steve Clifford during their time together in Charlotte. And ESPN posited a move to Phoenix even before the Suns cut Tyler Ulis.

Lin, as expected, elected to opt in for the final year of his deal with the Nets which is worth $12.5 million. If they trade the Harvard product now, it’s uncertain how much value they can get for a damaged asset that may or may not be ready to play at the start of the 2018-19 season.

The Magic are reportedly closing in on a deal with Isaiah Thomas, so going after Lin does not seem like a serious option for Orlando. Phoenix could be the better fit with Tyler Ulis no longer in the desert.

Lin’s 2017-18 season with Brooklyn was an ephemeral one, as he played in only one game the entire campaign. Jeremy Lin sustained a serious knee injury (ruptured patellar tendon) in Brooklyn’s season debut and spent the last nine months recuperating from it.
