The Brooklyn Nets and Kenny Atkinson parted ways on Saturday, and point guard Kyrie Irving found himself in the center of Atkinson's dismissal.

Kyrie reportedly “soured” on Atkinson early on, with other members of the coaching staff questioning Atkinson's usage of Irving.

Some reports also suggested Kyrie wanted Tyronn Lue to be Brooklyn's next head coach:

However, Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson of Heavy.com reported Kyrie does not have a preference:

Lue coached Irving during his time with the Cleveland Cavaliers, with the pair helping lead the Cavs to an NBA title in 2016.

But Kyrie is apparently not intent on orchestrating a potential reunion.

Things were always going to be different for the Nets this season after they signed both Irving and Kevin Durant in free agency. Irving's shoulder injuries changed matters pretty quickly.

In fact, the discrepancy between what Atkinson and Irving had to say with respect to the injury might have been the reason for some of the tension (via Robinson):

Kyrie Irving only played in 20 games this season. Irving’s dealt with thoracic bursitis in his shoulder; something Kenny Atkinson denied in December. “Whatever that report said is not true,” the former Nets head coach said back in December.

Irving said otherwise in the new year.

“There was some bursitis in there that was really, really impacting me,” Irving said back in January.

The Nets will give interim head coach Jacque Vaughn the chance to earn the full-time job, and it seems unlikely they will make a new hire prior to the conclusion of the season.

Lue might still wind up in the mix. But he is not Kyrie's “preferred” choice, according to Robinson.
