In a bizarre twist, New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has withdrawn from his new job as the Indianapolis Colts’ head coach. Instead, he intends to remain with the Patriots, who recently just lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LII. This bombshell news came after the Colts announced on Tuesday that McDaniels would be the team’s head coach beginning with the 2018 season.

This surprising development puts the Colts back in the hunt for Chuck Pagano’s successor, but if there’s any good news for Indianapolis, it’s that the assistant coaches brought in to help McDaniels will remain with the team, Mike Garofolo of the NFL Network has reported.

The Colts' assistants you've seen reported (e.g. Matt Eberflus as DC) have signed contracts and have been in the team's building, sources say. Indications are they'll still be with the team, albeit under a different HC than McDaniels.

But, if McDaniels’ withdrawal was not odd and shocking enough, consider this report from Garofolo’s colleague, Ian Rapoport, who notes that McDaniels was also contacting and offering jobs to assistants earlier today.

Not only that, but Josh McDaniels was calling assistants earlier today and offering them jobs. No more.

McDaniels’ sudden change of heart is providing confusion more than anything else as of the moment, but at least the Colts know that no one from their new assistants will be leaving them. NFL writer Jason LaCanfora said that sources fed him information that the Patriots made changes on McDaniels' contract to lure him back to Foxborough.

Sources said Robert Kraft and Bill Belichick made a strong, concerted effort to keep McDaniels. Altering his contract, enticing him to stay

There will surely be more details to come with regards to this surprising development. Stay tuned.
