The New England Patriots were searching for wide receiver help ahead of the 2018 NFL trade deadline. As Clutch Points has previously noted, one of their main trade targets was Green Bay Packers' wide receiver Randall Cobb. No deal ended up happening, but that doesn't mean that the Patriots should give up their interest in him.

Cobb is set to hit the open NFL free agency market, which means that the Patriots will have every chance to negotiate a deal with him. Tom Brady needs more reliable targets and Cobb would be a very wise signing.

During the 2018 season with the Packers, Cobb dealt with multiple injury issues. He was only able to play in nine games, catching 38 passes for 383 yards and two touchdowns.

Back in 2017, however, Cobb caught 66 passes for 653 yards and four touchdowns. That year, Cobb was caught in a bit of a target struggle with Davante Adams and Jordy Nelson.

Brady could use another target like Cobb next season. He had to deal with a receiving corps this year that included a suspended and oft-injured Julian Edelman, a shell of what Rob Gronkowski used to be, and a wide receiver depth chart that boasted Chris Hogan, Phillip Dorsett, and Cordarrelle Patterson.

While there are teams with a worse wide receiver depth chart, Brady could use more help. That is why the Patriots should revisit their interest in Cobb this offseason when free agency opens up.

New England is the type of offense that could utilize Cobb perfectly. They run a lot of quick routes and also have deep routes that any receiver can run. Cobb is the type of receiver that can make defenders miss in the open field, be a top-notch possession receiver, and also make big plays down the field at times.

Cobb is going to be a very popular free agent this year with the wide receiver class not being too strong. If the Patriots want him, they are going to have to be aggressive for him right out of the gate.

Needless to say, it will be interesting to see what Bill Belichick and the Patriots decided to do this coming offseason. Their age is beginning to show, but signing younger playmakers like Cobb can help them get younger. A lot will be seen from this week's matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game.

Expect to see the Patriots consider beefing up their wide receiving corps. They have some talent, but could use more to help take more pressure off of Brady's arm.
