The New Orleans Saints fell short in the playoffs, losing to the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC's divisional round despite beating them twice in the regular season, and there might be a lot of new faces playing football for the Saints next season.

Drew Brees might have played his final game in the NFL after another injury-riddled season, although nothing is official regarding his status. The Saints have the worst cap situation in the league and have a ton of questions to be answered when it comes to filling out the roster.

Kwon Alexander, who came over in a trade from the San Francisco 49ers, is due $13.4 million, and after a torn Achilles the Saints might choose to cut their ties with him. Jared Cook, Janoris Jenkins, and Nick Easton all have decent sized cap hits if they remain on the roster in 2021, and there's a good chance the Saints completely change up this roster, even more, if Brees decides to call it a career.

Head coach Sean Payton has failed to comment on the quarterback situation. If Brees doesn't return, the Saints will need a quarterback, unless they decide to roll with gadget-type Taysom Hill or Jameis Winston.

Nonetheless, the Saints will make some big cuts in the offseason, and this one player might be a shocker for many people.

QB Taysom Hill

Yes, Hill is the guy they could cut. Sure, he is Payton's favorite toy, and somebody that does a lot of things on this team, including throwing, catching, running, and playing on special teams, but this makes a lot of sense if the Saints want to have any space with which to work.

He has a cap hit of $16.1 million, which is among the highest on the team, and to be frank, that's too much to pay for a guy that is not going to be the heir apparent to Brees, no matter what Payton says.

Hill does a lot of good things on the field, that's never been questioned. However, he doesn't have what it takes to be the starting quarterback in the NFL, at least not for the Saints.

He started four games for the Saints when Brees was out with injury, and in those four games, he threw for a total of four touchdowns. Hill could throw the football, but his days from being a star at BYU are far behind him.

In all honesty, Hill is not worth that much money, not for any team. Also, Jameis Winston makes so much more sense as the incumbent starter if Brees does decide to retire.

Winston had a strange year in his final year at Tampa Bay, as he threw for 5,109 yards with 33 touchdowns, but also tossed 30 interceptions. However, this Saints team is different, and Winston has been learning from Brees for the past season.

Hill's a dangerous player, and perhaps he stays on this team on a restructured deal but paying him that much money to be the quarterback or not is not worth it, especially with the horrendous cap situation New Orleans is in heading into the offseason.

Brees has made no formal announcement regarding his retirement despite all the rumors, but the Saints did restructure his contract to provide them more financial flexibility as they await the decision from the veteran signal-caller.

He played in 12 games and two playoff games, although he got hit hard with injuries. Despite that, Brees poured in 2,942 yards with 24 touchdowns and just six picks on the year, but Tom Brady and the Bucs were too much for the Saints to overcome in the playoffs.

The Saints have been linked to a rookie quarterback in the draft, and with the Matthew Stafford trade, the market got kicked off with a huge start as teams across the league will be adding new quarterbacks at a record pace.

Micheal Thomas has been rumored to be on the market, but keeping Thomas and Alvin Kamara will do wonders for this team next season regardless of who is playing quarterback.

However, the future for Hill rests in the hands of the front office, and as much as Payton loves him because of his versatility, that huge cap number might be too much for them to hold on to as they look to find their next franchise quarterback.
